List of non-convertible formats
Postby garth » Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:23 am
This is a listing of formats that can't be converted using Translator. This does not include formats that are possible to be converted that we just haven't gotten to yet; it DOES include formats which have some type of copy-protection that make it "impossible" to convert.
Of course, any copy-protected format is hackable, but developers put copy-protection on their samples/formats for a reason. Converting those to another format defeats that copy-protection and devalues their product - we do not want to do this.
Kontakt Player 1 and 2 libraries (using samples in .nks or .nkx files)
Structure Factory libraries (the ones that come off the 32GB library, using ".big" files)
SampleTank files that using "2-pak" compression
Alesis Fusion files taht use their compression (many Hollow Sun libraries)
All Steinberg HALion 3 files
Properllerhead Refills; any files in one or a referenced file in one
EastWest PLAY files
Garritan Aria
Stylus RMX Core Library-type files
Vienna Instruments (not the original .gig/exs/Kontakt files, the new players)
Yellow Tools Independence
Roland VP-9000
This is a list of formats (probably not complete) that we have yet to convert, that will eventually make their way into Translator. If we are missing any, let us know. (This applies to the Windows version primarily; the Mac version will contain all the formats currently in the Windows version.)
Unity Session
Roland Fantom-G
Emu Emulator 2
Emu Emax 1 (8-bit compounded)
Korg DSS-1
Peavey DP-Series
Also note that proprietary flopppies cannot be read using Mac hardware in any way whatsoever.

I'll update the list, but I'll correct:
The list really is for formats that CAN'T be converted because of some immutable reason, mostly copy-protection. It isn't for things that are in the way due to some technical reason.
So far we haven't been able to figure out SP1200's floppy layout. Once we do, it's convertible. And regarding S-900/950, that's doable and will be out shortly.
It is true that since Mac's cannot read proprietary floppies, all "floppy formats", as long as they are on floppies, aren't technicallly convertible on a Mac. However, nothing stops a Mac user from using a PC (most "Mac users" own a PC, BTW) from using a utility to read and write that floppy onto an iamge file, which Translator Mac can deal with. This is currently the case with Emu, Ensoniq, and Roland things.

This thread is a list of NON-translatable formats. Meaning that these are NOT possible to convert.
The other categories are:
Formats we support
Formats we likely will do in the future
Formats we likely will NOT do in the future
Translator does support VSampler2. We may support VSampler3 but nothings really compelling us to do it. It would be difficult to do because the format is not self-documenting very well.
